Surface Modification and Characterization of Tourmaline Powder by Titanate Coupling Agent

    • The surface organic modification of tourmaline powder with titanate coupling agent was studied in detail with the parameters of settling time, oil absorption value and absorbance, and the optimal technological conditions were determined as 4% (of the mass of tourmaline powder) of titanate coupling agent with the solid/liquid ratio 10:50 of the ore slurry reacted at 60℃ for 1.0h in distilled water of pH9, and the settling time of modified tourmaline increased to 467min from 14min of raw tourmaline in liquid paraffin. The characterization of structure showed that surface organic modification has only reduced the surface polarity of tourmaline, but not altered the crystal structure of tourmaline, and the amount of released negative ions of modified tourmaline was 1.75 times of raw tourmaline.
